Vykrúcaj / turn, turn, turn
In this body of work created for her solo exhibit at the Embassy of Slovakia in Washington DC, Eleanor Kotlarik Wang used memories based on folk dances and music traditions in a personal artistic tribute to her ancestry. The old Slovak folk song “Tancuj, tancuj, vykrucaj” translates as “dance, dance, keep turning” and was the primary inspiration for many of the paintings. The memory of whirling skirts envisioned from an aerial perspective is explored in colors and floral folk patterns that follow the seasonal changes in nature. Figurative images express the joy of dance and motion.
